Local Utah Water Knowledge

The Hoggan family has worked with Salt Lake County water for more than 20 years, including the very hard water common across the valley.

Softening Plus Filtration

A softener can stand alone or be the first stage of a whole home system with carbon filtration and reverse osmosis drinking water.

What a Water Softener Does

A water softener removes or neutralizes the calcium and magnesium that make water hard. Those minerals are harmless to drink, but they are hard on a home. They form scale inside water heaters, dishwashers, washing machines, and pipes, clog showerheads and faucet aerators, and leave white spots on glass, tile, and fixtures. Hard water also keeps soap and shampoo from lathering well, so you use more of them and still feel residue on your skin and hair.

A softener is installed where water enters your home, so every tap, shower, and appliance gets treated water. Once the minerals are handled, fixtures stay cleaner, appliances run more efficiently, and cleaning gets easier.

How Hard Is Water in Salt Lake County?

Salt Lake County water is very hard. Water from the Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District, the county’s largest wholesale supplier, usually measures 10 to 12 grains per gallon (GPG). Anything above 10 GPG is classified as very hard, and some local groundwater wells test above 25 GPG (Herriman City water quality).

Hardness levelGrains per gallon (GPG)
SoftUnder 4
Moderately hard4 to 7
Hard7 to 10
Very hardOver 10

Because cities blend reservoir water with well water, hardness can change from one neighborhood to the next and between seasons. Our free in-home water test measures your home’s exact number.

Salt-Based Softening vs. Salt-Free Conditioning

We install both types and recommend one based on your water test.

  • Salt-based softener (ion exchange). Resin beads swap hardness minerals for sodium and regenerate with salt from a brine tank. This physically removes hardness and gives water the classic soft feel. It needs periodic salt refills and a drain connection.
  • Salt-free TAC conditioning. Template assisted crystallization turns hardness minerals into tiny crystals that don’t stick to surfaces. The minerals stay in the water, but scale buildup drops. There is no salt, no brine tank, and no regeneration cycle.

Softening as Part of a Whole Home System

A softener handles hardness, not contaminants. Most Salt Lake County homes also have chlorine or chloramines from municipal treatment, so many families pair softening with filtration. Every tier of our whole home filtration system starts with water conditioning (a softener or TAC) and adds activated carbon filtration. The Essentials and Enhanced tiers also include an under-sink reverse osmosis system for purified drinking water.

FAQ

Common Questions Answered

Do I need a water softener in Salt Lake County?

Most Salt Lake County homes benefit from a water softener because the water is very hard. Water from the Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District usually measures 10 to 12 grains per gallon, and anything over 10 GPG is classified as very hard. Some local wells test above 25 GPG. At those levels, calcium and magnesium build up as scale inside water heaters, dishwashers, pipes, and fixtures, and they leave spots on glass and tile. Soap and detergent also lather less, so you use more of them. A softener removes or neutralizes those minerals before they reach your plumbing. Because hardness varies by neighborhood and season, the best way to decide is a free in-home water test, which measures your home's exact hardness in about 30 minutes.

What is the difference between a salt-based softener and salt-free TAC?

A traditional salt-based water softener uses ion exchange: resin beads trade the calcium and magnesium in your water for sodium, then periodically regenerate with salt from a brine tank. It physically removes hardness minerals, so it prevents scale and gives water the classic soft feel. Salt-free TAC (template assisted crystallization) conditioning does not remove the minerals. Instead, it changes them into microscopic crystals that do not stick to surfaces, which reduces scale without salt, a drain line, or regeneration. We install both. Which one fits depends on your hardness level, how your household uses water, and whether you want to avoid adding salt. Your free water test gives us the numbers to make that recommendation.

How long does water softener installation take?

Most water softener installations take 2 to 4 hours. Our licensed Master Plumber connects the system to your home's main water line so every faucet, shower, and appliance receives softened water. We schedule the installation at a time that works for you, protect the work area in your home, and clean up completely when we are finished.

Will a water softener make my water safe to drink?

A water softener treats hardness, not contaminants. It removes or neutralizes calcium and magnesium to protect your plumbing and appliances, but it is not designed to remove chlorine, lead, PFAS, or other contaminants. For drinking water, most families pair a softener with activated carbon filtration and an under-sink reverse osmosis system. Our whole home systems combine all three, starting with the Essentials tier.

How much does a water softener cost?

The cost depends on your water hardness, the size of your household, and whether you choose a salt-based softener or salt-free conditioning. We give you a custom quote after a free in-home water test, so the price reflects the system your home actually needs. There is no obligation to buy.
